Let me share a story that may influence your decision on hiring contractors for home improvement needs. Recently a friend casually mentioned that an ex-contractor kept calling and asking for more work. After some probing questions, I learned that this ex-contractor was hired as he solicited his skills at a local home improvement store. Once this ex-contractor made it to the job, which was in the home of my friend, he provided not only a poor quality of service but he also provided personal information including having spent time in jail for “something he didn’t do”. This ex-contractor exhibited other red flags including asking for gas money and bringing other unknown individuals to the job site which never looked my friend in the eye. Of course my friend was uncomfortable and has since not returned the calls of this ex-contractor. My friend has since installed a costly security system and continually worries about the return of this ex-contractor.
Being a Private Investigator, I asked for this ex-contractor’s information. With just his name and phone number I was able to determine that this ex-contractor had a lengthy criminal history with two state jail felony convictions as well as an active warrant for his arrest.
I do not offer opinions on the principles to hire convicted felons, but I do offer people services to make informed decisions. As a former law enforcement agent, I know that where a crime has occurred one of the questions to the complainant will be who had access to the crime scene. All contractors will need to be excluded from the suspect list because history has shown that violent crimes and/or property crimes are often committed by the contractors whom had access to the premises. In the event that the person you hire as a contractor does not have a criminal history and a crime does in fact occur, the work product of an initial background check can be given to law enforcement to aid in a swift investigation.
Do you want to know if the person that has or will have access to your home and family has a criminal history? Let me share a few things that may influence your decision:

Remember that when you open your home to contractors, you are giving them access to your private spaces and your family. Your animals may get used to them and accept them as friend rather than foe. Your windows and locks are at their disposal. You may offer your keys or alarm codes to these individuals. Your personal information is almost always in plain view.
